If no stop has been set, then it will be a set number of spaces, usually 5. The modern tab stops in word processors replicate this function, bringing your cursor to the right ( or the left in right to left languages ) until the next tab stop that's been set. This made aligning things like lists and forms much easier, as well as offer consistent spacing for the indent to a paragraph. Back on typewriters you would move physical tabs.or later use a set/clear button to set what are called tab stops.and pressing the tab key would automatically bring the carriage to the next tab stop to the right.
